Are you unsure what the key icon is on Android devices?
Don’t worry. There are many android users who are in the same boat as yours.
You are now in the right place if you want more information about the padlock or key icon you see on your android phone’s status bar. We will share all information about this icon in this article.
Let’s move on…
What Is the Key Icon on Android?
The padlock, or key icon on Android, is an indicator that you are using VPN services on your phone right now.
What is a VPN? VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a method of securely connecting to the internet over a public network. As you read this post, let’s suppose that you are currently browsing this site from your Android phone.
If you don’t use a VPN service, your internet provider (i.e. If you want to, the company you use the internet from or the people who work for you can see that your browsing on this site.
They can also block your access to any website they wish. They have full control over your internet connection.
A VPN service can be used to circumvent the block. A VPN service can also be used to protect your internet browsing and keep it private.
This will allow the internet service provider to know that you are using a VPN service. They will not be able to see which sites you visit.
This will allow you to shield your browsing activities from prying eyes. These are just a few reasons why VPN services are so popular. As with all things in life, a VPN can have its pros and disadvantages.
We won’t discuss all of them today, as they are irrelevant to the topic. We can tell you that if you use a VPN on your Android phone, the status bar will display a padlock/key icon.
Simple Steps to Remove the Key Icon from Android
The annoying key icon can be removed, but third-party software will be required. This app won’t require you to root your phone. Here’s how it will clear your status bar.
Install SystemUI Tuner for Your Android Phone
First, you need to download SystemUI Tuner by Zachary Wandar. As we have previously highlighted Nacho Notch, Zachary’s app is no stranger to our eyes. You can download the app from the Play Store by clicking the link below. You will need to do some more steps after installing the latest version.
Playstore Link: SystemUI Tender (free).
Run ADB on your PC
SystemUI Tuner requires additional permissions to function properly. These permissions can be granted by using the ADB command.
ADB is difficult to use. You will need Command Prompt. You will also need to display hidden images on your smartphone. You’ll find out what to do in the next sections.
Open the Command Prompt in Right Directory
Next, connect your smartphone to your computer using a USB cable. Next, connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. This folder’s exact location may vary so search your hard drive for “platform–tools”.
Once you have found the platform-tools directory, you will need to copy its entire location path. Windows and most Linux builds allow you to do this by clicking on the address bar at top of the Explorer window. Then click “Select All” and then “Copy”. Mac users can open the platform-tools directory in Finder and press cmd+opt+p. This will display the path location. Next, right-click on the “platform-tools” at the bottom of your window and select “Copy as Name.”
Open a Terminal or command prompt. Windows users can press the Windows key and type “cmd” then hit enter. Open “Terminal” in your Applications folder on Linux or Mac.
Open the command prompt and type “cd” without the quotes. Next, hit ctrl+v or cmd+v to paste the location of platform-tools you copied earlier. The command should look like the one below. However, you may have a different folder location so hit enter to make sure the command window is operating in that directory.
Windows users can copy the URL by clicking on the address line in Windows Explorer.
Platform Tools on Mac: First, open the Finder and then press cmd, opt, p together. This will display the folder’s search location. Next, right-click Platform Tools and select Copy as a search term.
You will need to open a Terminal window, or Command Prompt. Windows users can open it by pressing the Windows key and typing cmd. After that, hit Enter to confirm. Mac and Linux users will need to open the Terminal in the Applications directory.
Type cd in the Command Prompt (or terminal window) and press space. This will copy the location of your platform tool folder to your clipboard. To complete the process, hit Enter.
ADB allows you to enable SystemUI Tuner
To enable SystemUI, you can use one of these commands:
adb shell pm grant com.zacharee1.systemuituner android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
./ adb shell pm grant com.zacharee1.systemuituner android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
This command is for people who experience an error with Windows PowerShell, Linux or Mac. If you are unable to execute any of the commands, it is possible that your ADB installation is not working.
SystemUI Tuner can hide the key icon on Android
Now you can remove the VPN key icon from your phone. The USB cable connecting your Android to your computer can be unplugged.
Open SystemUi Tuner in your Android phone. Scroll down to the bottom of the primary setup menu. It reads “continue not granting optional permissions.”
Next, select yes and follow the prompt to “To the tweaks”. Finally, choose the status bar and click the VPN icon. To hide the key icon, slide the bar. This is how to hide the key icon in Android. If you wish, you can delete SystemUI Tuner now.
If you have followed the steps correctly, the key icon should not be visible. It can be tested by connecting to your VPN server.
Here are some developer notes. If you try to use this app on older Samsung, Xiaomi, or Huawei phones, it might crash. The app may not work on these phones and the key icon will still be visible.
